Destination

Merida, Mexico

Merida is the gateway to Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, cenotes, and the Yucatán coast. In the city, the historic center, markets, and Sunday festivities are attractions in themselves. Mix ruins, cenotes, and city time.

Archaeological Sites

Chichén Itzá (about 2 hours) is the star; go early. Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc are closer and less crowded. Cobá is possible as a long day trip. Entry $5-15; guided tours $50-100.

Cenotes

Cenote Ik Kil (near Chichén Itzá), Cenote Samulá, and others are easy to combine with ruins or as a standalone trip. Some have facilities and life jackets; bring a towel and cash.
